The California Department of Conservation's Office Of Mine Reclamation estimates that there are approximately 47,000 abandoned mines throughout the State. Open abandoned mines present numerous hazards:

*  Most mines are not fenced or sealed shut.
*  People can fall hundreds of feet.
*  Mines can collapse.
*  Mines can flood.
*  The air can be toxic.
*  Lethal chemicals can be present.



* Stay on designated routes.
* Know where you are.
* Remain alert.
* Know the terrain. Maps are       available through BLM and         Friends of Jawbone.
* Be careful when OHV riding in   East Kern County, which is a    mining area.
* Never ride alone.
* Both riders should carry cell      phones.
* Wear the proper riding              equipment.
* Tell somebody where you're      going.
* Before you crest a hill, know     what's on the other side.
